SHOOTING AT RANDOM IS "POINTLESS"...AND NOT "BILLIARDS"!!!! This may be one of the greatest instructional tips / learning taglines I have ever encountered during my multi-decade teaching and competitive career. The credit of this "golden nugget" goes to Raymond Ceulemans ("Mister 100"), who is considered to be one of the greatest, if not "the greatest" carom player of all time. During a 3 Cushion event I was playing in I appeared to be locked into an "out of focus" demeanor, which was being observed by others. Just before the final match I played on a table that I had not played on before, and I saw a sign on the wall with the thoughtful words of this message. After careful consideration I made an amazing discovery -- I had been "shooting at random" without a good pre-shot routine or respectful game analysis of each shot, thereby providing lower "scoring" results than what I had been accustomed to in prior 3 cushion, pool, and "artistic pool" events. It was basically a lesson in "pointless" movements both before the shot at hand and in a disappointing lack of posting a "point" after the shot. I started to take these words to heart since nothing seemed to be working prior to this moment. I took a solid and fine tuned pre-shot mental positioning to each shot and envisioned what would happen exactly in my mind's eye. Slowly I started to enter a "burning focus" domain of attitude and the results were amazing. I was behind 15 to 10 against a very strong player and then it happened -- a run of 8 billiards with a "dreaded" kiss out on the 9th shot. My opponent made 2 more billiards and then missed, allowing me to complete the victory journey 20 - 17. This was "billiards" and a learning joy I will never forget. If you are struggling in your next competitive engagement, make an adjustment in your pre-shot routine and do not "shoot at random". Determine what you want to do before each shot, develop a good mental image of that happening, and let it happen!! You will find your "pointless" past becoming special "points" of victory and consequently "billiards" as it should be played.   On November 2, 2006 Team USA defeated Team Europe in the Finals of the inaugural World Cup of Trick Shots by a score of 13 to 11. All four players from each team competed in a special competitive format to determine the final “gold medal” champion team.
  
  In the 1st of 2 Semi - final matches, Bruce Barthelette and Andy Segal of Team USA bested Nick Nikolaidis and Bogdan Wolkowski of Team Europe by a score of 11 to 9. Team USA was awarded a solo “match” point, which was used in the final match points total.
  
  In the 2nd Semi - final match, Stefano Pelinga and Luke Szywala of Team Europe won over Mike Massey and Tom Rossman of Team USA by a score of 11 to 9. Team Europe was awarded a solo “match” point, which was used in the final match points total.
  
  This unique event…promoted by Billiards International…presented new and spectacular “artistic pool” shots and enjoyed an audience friendly environment in the Wolf’s Den at the Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino in Uncasville, CT.

• December 12, 2006 A New King Is Crowned -- 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship

  The tournament was held December 8th – 10th 2006, in Fridley, Minnesota at Two Stooges Sport Bar & Grill as the host site and thanks to owners Ty Wilson and Greg Asproth. This was the setting where twenty-five of the world's greatest artistic pool players came to battle in this prestigious event. However, there could only be one winner.
  
  The preliminary rounds started with all twenty-five players shooting 40 shots in the 8 different disciplines with the top 12 players advancing to the playoffs. The top 4 players with the highest score received a bye…automatically advancing to the quarter-finals.
  
  The playoffs started Saturday afternoon with Sebastian Giumelli defeating David Nangle 106 to 99, Mike Massey defeating Sal Conti 104 to 89, Steve Geller defeating Charles Darling 90 to 82, and Andy Segal defeating Bruce Barthelette 106 to 71 with each of the winners advancing to the quarter-finals.
  
  The quarter-finals started Saturday evening with some highly anticipated matches where five of the players were ESPN Trick Shot Magic veterans, along with two other experienced players and one exciting new comer.
  Mike Massey defeated Matt MacPhail 105 to 58, Tom Rossman defeated Steve Geller 86 to 60, and Sebastian Giumelli defeated Nick Nikolaidis 133 to 132 in a tiebreaker playoff match. The major upset of the evening is when new comer Eric Yow defeated veteran Andy Segal 103 to 76. All of the winners advanced to the semi-finals.
  
  Sunday’s semi-final matches were very exciting because of the three veterans and the new comer Eric Yow who will be fighting to make it in the finals. However, Tom Rossman defeated him 126 to 112 and Mike Massey defeated Sebastian Giumelli 111 to 76 and now the table is set for the finals to see who will be crowned champion.
  
  The full audience was anticipating the match in the finals between Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman and Mike Massey. They were team mates of the winning team in the 2006 World Cup of Trick Shots, they competed against each other in the 2006 ESPN Trick Shot Magic where Mike Massey became champion and Tom Rossman was runner up. The battle ground is now set once again for these two renowned players to go head to head once to see who will become the 2006 WPA Artistic Pool World Champion.
  
  Tom Rossman took an early lead at the beginning of the match and lost it one time to Mike Massey and never looked back. It came down to one last shot! Mike Massey was down by 9 points so he had to pick a shot worth the same value or greater to at least tie the match, and hope that Tom missed. Mike Massey failed to make the shot and was defeated 110 to 101, resulting in the crowning of Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman as the new 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Champion!
  
  It has been seven years since the World Pool – Billiard Association sanctioned the first Artistic Pool World Championship and Tom Rossman hasn’t won until now, always coming close, and always falling short until now. Once announced as the champion, tears were flowing like a stream from his eyes. You can see that this is momentous occasion for him because of all of the hard work that he put forth becoming the crusader for Artistic Pool as we know it to be. This is definitely a victory for the internationally recognized sport of Artistic Pool!

• May 5, 2007 “DR. CUE” WINS U.S. OPEN “ARTISTIC POOL” CHAMPIONSHIP!!
  On May 3, 2007 Shooters Billiards in Southington, CT welcomed 24 of the top “artistic pool” players in the United States. Veteran and conditioned champions as well as determined newcomers to this growing sport entered the competitive arena to perform select professional shots from the 8 structured disciplines of challenge. Each player expressed a focused desire to take home the overall champion title, plus one or more of the 8 discipline title attachments and special player designation of the sportsmanship recipient. (See complete listings below for award winners and overall finish)
  
  As the skill and beauty of the each “artistic” challenge unfolded it became evident during the preliminary rounds that this event would produce some of the highest scores ever recorded in the history of the sport. When all the balls had stopped rolling after the initial 40 shot challenges were executed by each competitor, Andy “The Magic Man” Segal posted an outstanding 250 points out of 341 possible. Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman edged out Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey, with both players scoring 246 points, but Rossman making more 1st attempts than Massey. “Quick Nick” Nikolaidis took a solid hold of 4th in the initial scoring with a very respectable 242 points. Matt “No Fail” McPhail and Charles “”Spitball Charlie” Darling registered scores over 200 also as the playoff matches took bracket form.
  
  Segal, Rossman, Massey, and Nikolaidis earned “bye” positions in the final 12 player “head to head” match play format. Rising superstar MacPhail defeated Jamey Gray, who demonstrated great promise during only his second event in the pro arena. Dave Nangle continued to show resolve in his “artistic pool” pursuits by edging out the always crowd pleasing Darling. Host room owner/promoter Sal Conti was victorious over US Open promoter and Team USA member champion Bruce Barthelette. Jason Lynch played superbly in his 1st ever playoff appearance, besting long time “artistic pool” friend and fan favorite Paul Danno.
  
  The quarterfinal matches allowed each high points player from the preliminary rounds to remain poised for the final race to victory as Rossman, Nikolaidis, Segal, and Massey defeated Conti, MacPhail, Lynch, and Nangle respectively. The venue filled to capacity in anticipation of 2 great semi final match ups. Nikolaidis posted a victory over Segal in a very close contest. Rossman and Massey continued their friendly multi – decade rivalry in “artistic pool” with “Dr. Cue” garnering another victory this time around. Special note should be made during this match that Rossman made 7 out of 7 wing shots for the 3rd time in the last 3 years.
  
  Nikolaidis and Rossman prepared for the final matchup. Just 2 months prior at the Masters Championship “Quick Nick” defeated Rossman with brilliant shot making and consistent play. Nikolaidis started out with a slim lead this time around and continued to hold it until late in the match, when he missed the most difficult long “yo-yo” masse. “Dr. Cue” made it on his 3rd attempt to take the lead. With one shot to go, Nick was forced to pick one of 2 remaining shots in the program with a degree of difficulty of 11. Choosing the very popular and extremely demanding “circular draw” shot, Nikolaidis approached the table and took his 1st attempt, which would guarantee a tie if he made it and Rossman missed it on 3 attempts. The shot missed by less than an inch, allowing Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman to become the 2007 US Open “Artistic Pool” Champion.
  
  A wonderful time was had by all the players and fans. The “sport and show” of “artistic pool” once again produced a perfect script of competitive beauty and a promise of enhanced vision for its future. A unique blending of junior, amateur, and professional talents is a primary factor in the “Dr. Cue” entry / selection process.
  
  Entry Note: The Dr. Cue Classic “Artistic” Cup will be promoted as a 48 player minimum field by “open” entry – as determined by confirmed “intent to enter” notifications and/or postmark of entries and payments received. Those “qualified” via industry events must confirm entry as well via this process by an established deadline date. Junior “artistic pool” championships will also be considered in the player selection process, along with all APTSA (Artistic Pool and Trick Shot Association) players and other “at large” interested players.
  
  SPECIAL NOTE: A RACK ROOM will be set up at “select” venues and the Dr. Cue Classic “Artistic” Cup site. This “welcome” room and “comfort station” for players, fans, and guests will provide:
  
  a) Rest, relaxation, and refreshment for everyone in attendance
  
  ~~~ TAKE A “BREAK” IN THE “RACK” ROOM ~~~
  
  b) Tour orientation and updates / visions for future events and promotions
  c) Shot/challenge presentations via DVD and / or “open forum” specialty training
  d) Event, player, fan, and special guest services to enhance overall venue experience
  e) Personal development of “life” and “game” skills and specific vision objectives
